The Sunday Reset Ritual That Keeps Me Sane (And My House Livable)

If you’ve ever looked around your house on a Sunday evening and thought, “Did a tornado come through here…

or was it just my children?” — then hi, hello, and welcome to the Sunday Reset support group.

It’s Sunday night.

There are still Goldfish crackers in the couch cushions, someone’s sock is stuck to the ceiling fan (don’t ask), and I’m 98% sure the mysterious sticky spot on the floor is from Tuesday.

Maybe Wednesday. Honestly, I don’t even care anymore.

But instead of panic-cleaning until midnight like I used to (RIP my sanity), I’ve started doing a thing I now lovingly call The Sunday Reset Ritual.

It’s not fancy, it’s not Pinterest-perfect, but it’s the one little groove in the week that helps me start Monday without wanting to cry into my lukewarm coffee.

Here’s how it goes down and yes, it involves bribery and dance music:

1. The 10-Minute Tidy (a.k.a. Family Tornado Time)

We set a timer for 10 minutes, crank up a family-friendly playlist (if “Shake It Off” doesn’t make your toddler clean with enthusiasm, I don’t know what will), and EVERYBODY pitches in.

No one is exempt — even my 3-year-old “folds” dish towels like she’s paid by the wrinkle.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s just: “Let’s make the house look slightly less like a disaster movie.” We pick up toys, toss trash, relocate the 47 sippy cups that have migrated to the toy bins, and call it good.

Mom tip: Make it a race. Make it dramatic. Pretend the floor is lava. Whatever gets them moving.

2. The Laundry Mountain Conquest

Laundry is my nemesis. It multiplies. It hides. It judges me from the basket.

But on Sundays, I face the beast.

I don’t try to wash everything (that way lies madness). I just do a couple of strategic loads:

  • School clothes
  • Underwear (because this is where things get critical)
  • Whatever smells the most offensive

And if I don’t fold it all? No shame. I put it in “The Bin” — a big ol’ basket of clean clothes that the kids can rummage through like it’s a TJ Maxx clearance bin.

We do what we can.

3. The Fridge Check + Snack Stock-Up

Nothing says “Monday morning meltdown” like realizing you have no bread, no yogurt, and only one brown-ish banana.

On Sundays, I do a quick scan of the fridge (read: throw out the science experiments), jot down some snack and lunch staples, and do a grocery order for pickup Monday morning.

BOOM. Instant win.

Also, I hide a few “secret snacks” for myself. These are not to be shared. These are sacred.

4. Calendar Huddle (with Bonus Whining)

We gather the kids (read: we bribe them with a cookie) and talk through the week.

Who’s got what? Are there library books due? Is this the week I finally remember show-and-tell?

Probably not, but I’m trying.

It’s chaotic, loud, and slightly unhelpful… but it helps my brain feel somewhat prepared for the weekday madness.

5. The Reset Reward

After all this semi-organized chaos, we end the night with something cozy:

  • Movie night
  • Popcorn picnic on the living room floor
  • Or, my personal favorite: a bath where no one talks to me for 23 whole minutes (a luxury spa in mom years)

Final Thoughts from the Couch (Where I’m Currently Hiding from Bedtime)

Mama, this little Sunday ritual is not about being super organized or having a Martha Stewart-level home.

It’s about carving out a moment of calm in the storm.

A soft reset button. A way to head into the week feeling slightly more in control — or at least knowing where everyone’s shoes are.

And if nothing else, at least the sock’s off the ceiling fan. Progress.

You got this, mama. Here’s to a fresh start… and hot coffee (or at least coffee that hasn’t been reheated three times).
